Transmucosal delivery systems introduce drugs / actives across the mucous membrane, which allows for the avoidance of the gastrointestinal tract and first pass liver metabolism and consequently allows the therapeutic to directly enter into circulation. Transmucosal delivery is particularly attractive because these membranes are thin and permeate allowing for the rapid uptake of a drug into the body. Transmucosal delivery systems offer several benefits over other methods of delivery that include - direct absorption, rapid onset, and lower dosage. The delivery systems are also relatively simple and are, therefore, inexpensive to produce.

The primary nasal transmucosal products are in the nasal spray, pump or gel form. We have the expertise that allows us to identify relevant compounds for this type of delivery technology. We are able to address critical Issues such as exact dosage requirements, potential nasal degradation, and size or charge impediments for transmucosal movements.

Furthermore, we are able to identify existing therapeutic modalities that would benefit from transmucosal delivery (i.e. migraine headache prevention technologies). The growth rate for transmucosal drug delivery systems is expected to increase 11% annually through 2007. Worldwide market revenues are at $3 Billion with the US at 55%, Europe at 30% and Japan at 10%.
